UIA Obel Award Talk: "my most emotional speech so far"
Last week I had a visit of a friend from North Africa and he said to me, “why has no one, not one architect of the Global North yet apologised for creating an image, an dream of modernity with the false promise of a life in paradise and acknowledged, that it was the wrong way, it was a mistake”? So this is what I want to do now in front of the global community of architects.
As an architect coming from the global North I ask with all my heart the Global South and the planet for forgiveness, that we created an ideal of an architecture that is supposed to give us an easy, comfortable, non stressful, save, healthy and happy life while in fact we contributed massively to social injustice, making us more rich by exploiting you and by raping the earth, causing dramatic climate change with our profession.
And it did not bring us happiness. It brought us magazine covers, fame, money, jet set life with carbon emitting conferences - but no happiness. It even took us the joy of our profession because we created a corsage of rules and regulations and an atmosphere of fear and control that makes it very difficult to allow real creativity and intuition and a social construction process.
I ask you for forgiveness that we colonised even your dreams of how a good home is supposed to look like and make you believe that imported materials are superior to the endogenous ones.
I ask you for your forgiveness recognising there is a lot of work to do towards equality, towards peace.
We are at a point in our human history where we need a real alternative way of building and we can only develop this alternative together. As one family sharing one planet.
I`m very fortunate, because before I was an architect in Europe I got trained in Bangladesh by craftspeople, by an NGO and nowadays also by a community in Ghana. And the most essential lessons that I learnt were: use the existing materials, the potentials inside of you, around you and within your network and create something unique out of it. It brings resilience and dignity instead of a dependence on external factors. And for this I’m deeply grateful and I` m on my way To use this lesson in my own context in Europe.
I also learned, that the process is just as important as the outcome.
And: that you can build up structures and at the same time as you can build up communities.
Changing is never comfortable but there is a lot to win. A lot of joy. Good relationships. A meaningful life. Happiness
I owe you my heartfelt apology. I owe you my deepest gratitude and my biggest respect.

Akademie der Künste Berlin the gerat Repair
In the "The Great Repair" exhibition, architect Anna Heringer contributes her expertise in sustainable building practices, focusing on traditional techniques and natural materials. Her work emphasizes the importance of repair and preservation in architecture, aligning with the exhibition's exploration of ecological alternatives to growth-driven narratives. Heringer's projects, showcased in the exhibition, highlight how sustainable design can reduce resource consumption and promote durability, solidarity, and cultural vitality. Her contributions underscore the potential of repair as a guiding principle in contemporary architecture.
The exhibition project "The Great Repair" explores the contradictions between growth and ecology through the lens of architecture's material culture. It presents over 40 contributions from art, architecture, and spatial practices where repair emerges as a new design paradigm. The exhibition examines how repair policies and aesthetics, viewed from postcolonial, feminist, and posthuman perspectives, could offer a meaningful alternative. Concepts such as sufficiency, durability, solidarity, reappropriation, plurality, and care work are explored as politics of a repair society.

Order of Merit for Anna Heringer
On September 21st Anna Heringer received the Order of Merit from the Germany’s president Frank-Walter Steinmeier and we are deeply happy to share this wonderful news with you. We still can’t believe it!
Thank you to all the colleagues, friends, and team members who shared the joy, visions and passions.
„Anna Heringer is considered a pioneer for sustainable building. She relies on clay as an alternative to concrete. With her philosophy, the internationally highly acclaimed architect "builds a bridge" between old construction methods and modern concepts.”
"She knows how precious our resources are and that we have to protect them. She is rediscovering old building materials for future-oriented architecture," said Steinmeier.”

Architecture has the power to change society. Finally, we handle big budgets and
valuable resources. We can build a mere building, and we can build a community at
the same time. We can design so that resources are exploited and a few become
very rich. We can also pursue an emancipatory aspiration that empowers people to
develop local solutions with their existing potential - local materials, human strength,
and creativity. These in turn would strengthen circular economies, promote local
identity and relieve the environment.
If I reduce my inner architectural discourse to the essentials and to one main
strategy, then that is it:
x 7 billion.
I try to multiply every creative decision in my imagination with our current world
population, wondering what the world would look like if everyone were acting,
building the same way. Would it be fair and foster stability? Would it be sustainable
and healthy for people, the planet and society? Leave waste or knowledge? Fit for
future generations? Would it be beautiful and humane?

Single-Handedly Exhibition at Art Omi, USA
Dipdii Textiles was present in Art Omi in USA from January 11 – March 1, 2020, part of a beautiful collection of handmade architectural drawings.
Single-Handedly collects original drawings from a group of accomplished contemporary architects who, in an industry dominated by digital technologies, continue to work by hand.
Radically diverse in scale, materials, technique, subject, and spirit, these works overturn preconceived notions of what an architectural drawing is like. Some are dreamy, fiery and avant-garde, and others pragmatic, reductive and nostalgic.
Deeply informed, but nonetheless unconstrained, by traditional architectural drafting techniques, these renderings exploit an unparallelled formal freedom. Each one contains its own world and tells its own story, rooted in personal imagination.
This exhibit gives vibrant testimony to the still-vital craft of hand drawing in architecture.
This exhibition is co-curated by Warren James, Director, Art Omi: Architecture; and Nalina Moses.

ANNA HERINGER, Anna Heringer architect #anna heringer #tempodacqua #thetimeofwater
Anna Heringer declares “The vision behind, and motivation for my work is to explore and use architecture as a medium to strengthen cultural and individual confidence, to support local economies and to foster the ecological balance. Joyful living is a creative and active process and I am deeply interested in the sustainable development of our society and our built environment. For me, sustainability is a synonym for beauty: a building that is harmonious in its design, structure, technique and use of materials, as well as with the location, the environment, the user, the socio-cultural context. This, for me, is what defines its sustainable and aesthetic value.”

Happy women`s day all around the world!
To me this day is always an important one. I haven't been a feminist until I became an architect. Not when I was working in Bangladesh I felt treated different or unfair. No, the feeling of inequality started when I got involved in the international architecture scene. There is still a lot to be changed.
It is not just about being more female architects in higher positions. It is also about more female qualities in architecture. More intuition. More empathy and more humanity. More sharing.
It starts with education. All the focus is on analysing, arguing, structuring, grids... but as much as one can train the left side of the brain, also the right, the more intuitive and freely creative hemisphere can be trained. And more emotional communication instead of only fact based arguing. We need to be good in both parts in order to create holistic qualities of architecture and spaces.
Often what matters most in architecture is the outcome. The nice pictures on glossy paper in the magazine. But the process needs same care. How goals are achieved and not just how many. The quality of the process is just as important as the final building or the number of buildings realized.
And yes, I think we need more women in higher positions, if necessary with a quota until it becomes normal. Inequality needs to be realized before thinking patters can change. Whenever I have the opportunity to work together with a female decision maker I realize how easy it feels, when all this gender battles and games are unnecessary. What a waste of energy. What a difference when you don`t have to proof that you are equally qualified.
Why are there so many talented female architects that don't dare to stand on their own feet? I think one of the main reason is because of the fear of balancing family and work life. I can tell by my own experience it is not easy. But possible.
So go straight ahead dear fellow women in architecture, have courage and trust and make the world more beautiful and humane!

The jury unanimously recognised the architectural quality of this project, as well as its modernity. Integrated into the local context, it proposes an interpretation of the archetypes of the rural ksars and the urban medersas. The jury was seduced by this humanist project that combines technology, culture and the socio-economic reality of the region. This architectural sculpture plays skillfully, both externally and internally, with the overlapping of volumes and light and shade."

An Infinite Vision of Summer
"This project evokes the sights, smells and textures of summer. At the heart of the structure is a meditation chamber. Visitors would enter it barefoot, so feeling the sea of barley grain that floods the room. They might then lie down in the bathtubs and enjoy a view of the suspended upside-down barley fields, swaying gently in an artificial breeze." (15 June - 30 August 2010, V&A Museum London)

History and Practice - Exploring the role of history in contemporary architectural practice
Saturday April 25th, 2009
The intent of this workshop is to bring together scholars and practitioners of architecture to discuss critical approaches to the role of history within contemporary practice. The situation, we suspect, demands a re-assessment of the theoretical relationship between architect and historian and we suggest that a renewed responsibility toward the discipline and society at large is needed. How can we conceptualize this critical practice?

The Darkside Club - Biennale 2008 in Venice
"The Darkside Club, acts as a satellite event to the Biennale, providing a platform to showcase the best of current thinking within a forum of critical debate.
The curators for 2008 3x3x3 are three leading experimental practitioners and master teachers Greg Lynn (USA / UAA Vienna), Patrik Schumacher (UK / AA London) and Gregor Eichinger (Vienna / ETH Zurich). The curators will explore issues aligned to how space and architecture perform in an increasingly sophisticated century, which continues to question the physical limitation of the built environment.
It is hoped that The Darkside Club will continue to create an international dialogue on emerging experimental practice. Through presentation and visuals presented by young practitioners from around the world the curators will offer their themes for debate, to be moderated by some of the leading critics and debated with a panel of leading architects and journalists and the salon as a whole."
